Art April 25-29

Piñatas

A piñata is a container often made of paper maché or pottery; it is decorated, and filled with small toys or candy, or both, and then broken as part of a ceremony or celebration. Even though piñatas are commonly associated with Mexico; the origin of the piñata is Chinese not Hispanic. It was used to celebrate the coming of spring. As a result of Marco Polo’s adventures into China, he introduced this Chinese custom which was adopted by the Spanish as well as by the French and Italians. The Spanish brought this custom to the new world when they conquered Mexico.

Objective: The student will be able to create their own piñata using a mixture of glue, water and a balloon.

Resources:

Elmer´s Art Paste

Water

Balloons

Crepe paper

Tissue paper

Newspaper

Small treats

Activities:

Students will create 3D Art using paper maché, glue and balloons
